Can the Republicans Win?

Oct 24 2006

what to say.

I think it’s impossible for another republican to get into office, but hey - Justin and I thought it would be impossible for Bush to get re-elected, and we were wrong.
- Ashley

Where do I begin? Firstly, I am a democrat, I do not like Bush or the way he runs his regime, and I am (obviously) rooting for a Democrat to win the presidency in 2008.

With that said…. My first thought was: WHAT? That has to be the most ridiculous thing (no offense to the writer because I do not know her) that I have read in a while, then I read the rest of the sentence, that put things into a better perspective, but it is not only not impossible for another Republican to get into office, there is always a chance that the Democrats would not get the majority in either the House or the Senate in the upcoming Nov. 7th election.

Now, let me clarify that I think the likelihood that the Democrats do win a majority in at least 1 of the two houses is very good. The Repubs seem to continue to make things worse for themselves. Moreover, the more President Bush speaks, the worse things get. Contrary to what he believes, the American public is not filled with a bunch of clueless people. We do listen, and we do understand. Additionally, we are pissed with the way things are going.

The reality is that things can, and do change quickly. One month ago, the Republican’s were sitting “pretty” because fundamentally, they were relatively safe. Although they had their dissenters, those who were beginning to see that the party politicians were not doing the job that they (the constituents) elected them to do, they did not fear losing a majority in the Legislative Branch because they could do some slick spinning and keep party members in line.

However, after the Mark Foley scandal, in addition to the numerous other corruption issues that have come out before/since, the party is (or at least it should be) sweating bullets. The (Civil) War in Iraq is killing the President and his advisers now because they see that this stupid “course” that they want is not working. More and more people, yes even American soldiers, are dying, and we are not happy about it. I really believe that, after the election, the President will announce a new new plan to try to mitigate the problems. (There is no solution, there is only bad, worse, and more worse as of right now.)

I hate to sound like the eternal pessimist, because I think the Democrats have a great chance of out-voting the Republicans this time around, but everything can change in 2 years. Hell, everything can change in two weeks. And, no matter how much of a Democrat I am, I am not a Hilary Clinton fan. (Can you believe I actually considered applying for an internship? Lol, I just didn’t want to write a paper.)

Without pretending to know everything about American politics (other than Bush = war = bad!), I can say this: George Clooney 2008! w0000t!

Sadly, he did say he wouldn’t run, but yea, he would be a great president lol. Sort of.

    He’d never get elected though.

Jessica, you just gave me another thing to write about. And, it’s already sounding good in my head.

Glad to hear that you’re not a Hilary fan, lol. I’m a conservative myself, but even the Republicans aren’t 100% satisfied with the Bush administration. Honestly, I really want another Ronald Reagan. We need a strong leader who is going to get things done in 2008. Not that I believe Bush hasn’t done *anything* during the past six years, but nothing stands out like “tear down this wall”.

    Just my $0.02

I have my issues with the Reagan administration, but it’s good to hear conservatives admit that the current administration leaves a LOT to be desired.

I don’t really know much about American politics (just about as much as Amanda does) I hope that this time the Americans will vote wisely.

I think it’s safe to say that most of the world was shocked that Bush got re-elected.

I heard thats someone (I can’t remember his name) was going to try and run for president and when he would get into the office he would start WWIII

I shouldn’t really say anything, since I don’t know all the facts and all… (I’m Australian) But yeah, why the heck is everyone going to Iraq when it was blatently obvious they didn’t want help? =/

I’ll just pretend like I know what you’ve said. You know, I even googled the democratic and republican parties to try and understand it all. I left more confused than ever.

Is it even more worse that when you mentioned Hilary I immediately thought “Duff”?

lol… If you’re not American, I wouldn’t expect you to know about it I guess. I mean, not everyone studies politics. And, even though I’ve studied a bit of international politics, and I know a bit about British, French, Chinese, Russian…, I could never say that I know everything.

But, if you make an effort to get informed, that makes you much better than most.

My thoughts though. If you live in a global society, you should know about the governments in other countries, like the US, because their policies will affect yours. There is no doubt.
