I have integrity
… do you?
Ok, so today I bought lunch. I’m really in a bad mood with all the stuff that I have to do, but I’m also hungry. So, I pay and the guy, the cashier, gives me too much change. And guess what, instead of keeping it, I give him back the excess. I’m a good girl I guess .
Do you believe in karma? In some ways I do, in others I believe that you make your own fate. But, aside from all of that, I believe in right and wrong. Although there are gray areas, there is still a fundamental right and a fundamental wrong.
Think of it in this way, if everyone decided that they would take the extra change, the businesses would see this, and see that they are losing profit incrementally. How can they compete with this? Charge higher prices, you–the consumer–suffer, and/or pay their employees less, really everyone can suffer because the employees will have less morale, put in less effort, give the wrong change more often, and prices will continue to rise.
See? It’s self-perpetuating. So, by my giving back the excess change, I’m really saving the world! Can you believe it?
Ok, maybe that’s a little extreme, but it does make sense in a way right? The reality is though, I never thought about all of that at the counter. I just made that all up as I was typing. My only thought was, “this is the right thing to do, so I have to do it, even if I may not want to.”
So, my question is, if you were given too much change, would you be honest?

If they gave me too much change, and it really is a lot more than they should give out I would give it back. I have to say it doesn’t happen a lot here, they always count back from what I gave them so they know immediately when they make a mistake.
The other day though I was reading a forum and this relatively young girl was all proud how she got free horse riding boots. She and her mother went to a store to buy some stuff for th e horse as well as some riding boots. At the till the didn’t notice (both girl, mother and cashier) that the boots weren’t being calculated into the price. I seriously can’t believe you don’t notice your final total is at least $100 less than it should be (because that’s the minimum they cost!). They didn’t see it until outside the store. But they did go back? No they went home. That to me is just stealing. You notice something is wrong while you’re still there and decide not to act on it.
I would have gone back, maybe they would have given me a discount for my honesty, maybe not. It doesn’t really matter since a) I would feel good about not steeling and b) I decided to pay for them before purchasing so there really isn’t a loss for me.

I meant stealing lol, early morning still
I might have made more mistakes.
I agree. That’s really disgusting though. I can’t believe her mother is basically teaching her that it’s ok to do something like that just because you can.
Oh, I would! This made me think of the fact that (where I live) a lot of people travel on the metro/buses without tickets, and then get annoyed when they get fined for it. The concept of travelling without paying is just unacceptable to me, even if I can understand it. People should THINK! And have some common sense.
