Why I Probably Won’t Review Your Site

(I think that’s a long enough title.) I get asked occasionally to critique someone’s site, and I’m fine with that. I love to give my opinions, and I do it quite frequently. However, I probably will not do any official review of someones website (even though I joined the PSGR Review Club, and possibly other things that I can’t remember right now).

Why? Well, there are many reasons.

Firstly, I am obsessive compulsive. I cannot live until something is perfect, which is why I’m sure some of you notice that I always change something on my site every day. I see something that just does not look right, and I can’t stop until it does.

This becomes a problem when it’s your site. I will go through every page, every line, every piece of coding and I will try to find all the errors that I can. Not only will this take for ever for me to do (and you to read), but I’m pretty sure that it will annoy the heck out of you after a while.

Secondly, I’m not a web designer. I don’t go to school for this stuff, this is just a side hobby that I partake in because it’s fricken cold outside, and I can’t stay out for too long before I start to go numb. So, there are plenty of other sites that are actually GOOD that will critique you, e.g., Review You (which I hope will actually take requests some day again).

Finally, there’s seems to be a inundation of “Web Drama.” People are really sensitive today. They don’t take advice, and they don’t know tact. It’s really ridiculous. Moreover, it seems like every other site has some kind of web drama problem or discussion on it. (My links here are just examples, not a complaint about any site.)

It’s fine if you want web drama on your site, or if you accept it there, but I don’t. If you have a problem with me (and I’m sure there’s at least 1 person), fine let me know, but don’t bring it here. c0rinne.net is supposed to be a place to relax, laugh, or whatever. It is not a place where you scream, shout, and dance about some crap like the font I’ve used, or whatever.

On a more personal note as promised a couple days ago.

Last year, I was supposed to (in my belief) get a promotion. I worked at this place for 2 years, and did a damn good job. I was one of the best (no really). So I applied for the promotion, but I didn’t get it because I wasn’t going to be in town for the summer. Makes sense right? No. Not when they tell you it’s fine to apply even if you are not going to be there for the summer. I was one of the employees there the longest, and I was a great help, or so they tell me. But, I don’t get the promotion.

Ok… fine, I quit. So, a few days later, I’m there to put in my final hours, and one of the people who decides who gets the promotion is there. We had been pretty cool all year. I thought he was a decent guy, and sort of easy on the eyes too (heh). I thought we got on pretty well, but he really snubbed me. Anyway, he was there, and I couldn’t look at him. He was looking at me, talking to me, and I couldn’t look at him. It was an hilarious experience. Very awkward.

So, what do I see this year? We have a class together. He walked in, and sat down, and I almost burst out laughing. I can’t wait… 4 months with this guy. Just what I would love.

I don’t keep my emails

I have at least 15 different emails. Some on my domains, a few GMail addresses, a couple different school emails, Yahoo… and etc. I have [too] many.

I get >150 emails a day. I delete them all, usually after I’ve read (and maybe replied to) them.

Email is the best way to contact me, but it’s the worst way for me to keep in contact. Why? It’s that obsessive compulsive thing again. I hate it when I have a inbox with stuff in it.

I’ve had my share of e-drama recently, which wasn’t really my idea of fun. Another good review website is Umbrella (and I’m not just saying that because I’m part of the staff either!), when they have submissions open too.

Have you been diagnosed with OCD (Sorry if that sounds inappropriate or nosey, I’m just curious)?

Yes, I’m a messed up girl. lol

I’ve been to Umbrella, but I couldn’t submit because the submissions were closed, and now it’s being moved. :(

But, I do know that they reviewers are great. ;)

Oh my lord, I really seriously truly think we can be twins… or somewhat. I have a little OCD over the way my site looks as well. I can spend hours just twindling around little details that I’m positive no one will even notice. But I still do it anyway. I like to clear my Gmail, Hotmail and WordPress spam emails almost every hour just because I can’t stand the sight of seeing spam. We are done for. Lol.

That’s not necessarily a bad thing Cor. I’d rather have a reviewer who nitpicked over every single little thing, than one who just did a general review. Go for it!

Everyone is involved in E-drama or at least writes about it (like me). I don’t want to get involved in the E-drama thing, but sometimes it’s just hilarious to read through all the comments only to find most of them are based on… nothing!

Also, I’m like you when it comes to things being perfect, if it isn’t I can go on and on about it until I feel satisfied, even if that means I have to stay up all night to get it fixed.

I stopped getting my sites reviewed because the reviewers were incredibly harsh for no reason. They didn’t even give me a chance to clean up their “issues”, and re-review me. So I said, forget it! :D

I have a sense of humor along with the next person, but unmitigated evilness is quite another.

A detailed review is much more helpful than a “it’s nice all in all” one. For site owners that can’t really be bothered to check their stuff meticulously, it’s a huge bonus that someone else is!

I’m the same with my inbox! I use Gmail and once I’ve read something, I give it a label and archive it. Why delete? So much space! It’s reaching 3gb now.

About the web drama, Carina started it I swear! :-P

Ah,then you probably have some of the qualities that go into being a good quality assurance analyst (software tester)… That’s what I do for a living – I set quality assurance process for software development as well as test software (find bugs). We demolish software until most bugs have been found and fixed… until it’s good enough for shipping.

However, a good tester actually cannot be a perfectionist (yes, it’s true). It’s theoretically impossible to find all bugs. There’s no such thing as bug-free software. You just need the software to be of the highest quality based on the quality criteria that you’ve outlined.

Also, as a software tester… you need to learn a lot of patience and TACT… Know how to deliver the bad news. Developers don’t like being told that their software has problems. Some people take it personally.

But the above is true of most jobs anyway. Good communication skills and having high standards (but realistic).

Hmm. I’m quite obssessive about little details too, but not too too extreme. Sometimes I just give up.

But I like to keep my emails. I can’t help but think that maybe one day, I might want to look back at the emails or refer to it somehow. x_x; I can’t part with anything I have.
